Generator Auto Start Control
(identical to ES52 model which we may substitute depending on availability)
This unique control panel provides automatic start/stop and
protection control for all types of engine-driven equipment. It operates in a wide
range of temperature environments and DC voltage ranges. However, if your operating
voltage is 24VDC instead of 12VDC you must replace the output relay. Be sure to
select the proper voltage using the dropdown menu when ordering so that relay will be
included. If using the AS52 to start the generator on low battery voltage, connect a
Voltage Controlled Switch or the Aux Relay on a Trace SW series inverter to the AS52
input.
The AS52 - It's simple design provides cost effective solutions to
everyday applications. Focusing on technology since the initial design resulted in a
product that is complete, yet easy to use. Take a look at the specifications included in
this compact package. Its rock solid design is so reliable that the manufacturer backs
every one of them with a 3 year warranty. Made in Canada.

The manufacturer warrants the product with specifications as explained herein. The
manufacturer shall repair or replace defective material or workmanship, which prove to be
defective under normal and proper use within three (3) years from the date of shipment.
This warranty is limited to the manufacturers product and does not cover labor,
transportation or other consequential expenses. This constitutes the only warranty of the
manufacturer and no other warranty shall be implied.
Unique Features & Options
Safety Functions and Indications
Loss of Speed Signal and LED Indication
A Loss of Speed Signal is detected and indicated by a flashing Overspeed LED, if the speed
signal is not present during cranking and/or engine running. If signal is lost while
cranking, the Crank event will be aborted. If the signal is lost while the engine is
running, the engine will stop under a fault condition. This feature prevents damage to the
starter system while cranking, and prevents failure to stop if an overspeed condition
occurs.
Design and Reliability Features
Three (3) Year Warranty
Total product support for this controller is backed up by a Three Year Manufacturers
Warranty against defects in material or workmanship. Complete warranty details are
available for review.
Dual Purpose LEDs
Onboard LEDs in the AS52 serve Dual Purpose for annunciation of engine conditions. Steady
and Flashing illumination differentiates between the alarm condition present. The
controller front label is designed with Dual legends for these dual-purpose LEDs.
Low Voltage Capability
The controllers 3.5Vdc 30Vdc operation range allows for positive engine starts
under low battery voltage conditions. This feature insures the engine will start when
required.
Low Temperature Operation
The A52 controller operates between 40 C to +85 C with less than 1% drift in
settings.
Oil Circuit Integrity Check
A dip switch is used to select engine operation with, or without, an oil pressure switch.
If operation with an oil pressure switch is selected, the controller "observes"
the state of the switch and "looks" for a closed circuit before the start of the
crank event (switch is closed when engine stopped; no oil pressure). If it does not see a
closed circuit, the controller will not allow engine start to prevent against incorrect
oil pressure switch wiring, or a possible defective switch. This features
"checks" the integrity of the low oil pressure switch on engine start and if
found faulty, annunciates via the Low Oil Pressure LED.
Circuit Protection Throughout
Most electronic controllers fail prematurely due to reverse power or inductive kickback
fault conditions. The AS51/52 controllers have Built-In Reverse Polarity and Inductive
"Kick-Back" Current Protection. Annunciation outputs have an Auto-Reset device
that protects against overload conditions. On correction of the problem, the device resets
automatically. No specialty fuse replacement is required.
Oil Pressure Bypass
The Oil Pressure Bypass on engine startup is set automatically by counting engine
revolutions, rather than time, therefore eliminating need for user adjustment.
Universal Speed Sensing
Selectable speed ranges allow for greater precision and versatility of use. Superior EMI
(electrical noise) immunity and capability to detect and read low frequencies allow for
use of various speed signal sources to controller: magnetic sensor, alternator, flywheel
alternator and AC generator.
Zero Speed Restart
Zero Speed Restart makes sure that the engine has fully stopped before allowing the
starter motor to re-engage. No more starter engagements while the engine is coasting down.
True speed sensing, even in "stopped" engine state, allows for safe and
troublefree starting of engines.
Additional Features
Annunciation Outputs (additional option only)
Annunciation Outputs provide signaling for remote annunciators monitoring engine
conditions.
Extra Fault Input with Flashing LED (additional option only)
An Extra Fault Input will trip the engine on the presence of a failure condition and will
indicate such fault by a flashing LED. This extra input may be a low water level probe,
generator overvoltage relay, etc.
Timer Function with LED (additional option only)
A multi-purpose integrated Timer is available for one of four functions. The specific
functions are annunciated by an on-board Yellow LED:
SmartChoke Function: The timer is selected to act as an output for a choke solenoid
applied during cranking. The SmartChoke is disconnected after crank disconnect, but is
re-engaged if the engine speed falls below the crank disconnect setting. This cycle
repeats until engine stabilizes above crank disconnect speed setting.
Preheat Function: When selected for this function, the timer acts as a Preheat Output for
energizing glow plug circuits. The preheat circuit is energized for an adjustable time
(0-32 sec.) prior to cranking. Additionally, the preheat remains energized through the
cranking and shortly after startup to reduce smoke emissions.
Engine Slow Function: The timer is selected to provide an output for an adjustable time
(0-256 sec.) after the engine starts. This output may be used to actuate a solenoid
controlling engine speed for warm up or idle settings.
Air Gate Trip Function: The timer is selected to provide an output, only during an
overspeed fault, for a fixed 10 seconds. This output may be used to energize a solenoid
cutting off air supply to the engine.
NOTE: These features are on the same output terminal and only one function can be enabled
at a time via a DIP switch.
Sample Application
Click on the thumbnail images below to see a sample installation
with a Honda portable generator. This generator was converted to propane and the
AS52 controller added at the same time. The images below show the interconnecting
wiring between the Honda control panel, the AS52, the safety shutoff solenoid valve, and
the vacuum switch that operates the solenoid valve. The AS52 was installed in a PVC
junction box for mounting on a wall near the generator. To make the connections to
the Honda generator terminal blocks were mounted inside the control panel and Quick
Connects were used (space very limited).
