Hydroelectric Generators

A hydroelectric system requires more than just the turbine and generator.

For a complete system with a dc source you will also need a diversion load controller, diversion load, dc-to-ac inverter, switchgear, battery bank, wire and cable, water intake screen, piping and valves, weather protected powerhouse, etc. We can quote most of these items. Total system cost is several times the cost of the turbine alone.

If you are comparing to a PV solar system keep in mind that the Wattage of a hydroelectric turbine generates more than five times the electricity as a similar Wattage solar system because hydro runs 24 hours per day.

In the USA access to water and the use, control and diversion of water flows is subject to federal and state regulation. This is true regardless of whether or not the stream is on private property. Be sure to read Regulation of Hydro Projects on our Hydroelectric Information page before ordering.

Hydroelectric Turbine Generators
When comparing the cost per watt for these systems to solar or wind, keep in mind that you may get far more total energy out since they can operate 24 hours per day as long as water is available.  Maximum electrical output may not be achieved unless proper pressure and flow are available.  For more on this see information page.
Micro hydroelectric generators are not UL Listed.  If your installation will be inspected make sure this is acceptable before ordering.

NOTE: ¢/kWH based on purchase cost of hydroelectric turbine spread over 10 years of kWH generated at rated power output.  Figures do not include costs of piping, balance of system components, installation or maintenance.  Credits for state and federal incentives not included.  Performance and ¢/kWH will vary considerably depending on actual head, flow and any out of service time.  Formula: ¢/hWH = 1.14 x $price ÷ Watts
