Universal Controller for
Automatic Transfer Switches
240 Vac 1 or 3 phase
other Voltages available
(field installable and programmable)

An Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) transfers critical electrical loads from the normal utility (grid) source to a standby generator backup source. When the grid is restored it automatically switches the load back. The controller is the "brains" that performs and the monitoring of the two sources, the starting and stopping of the standby generator and the transfer control.

The NATS22A is a multi-function programmable logic automatic transfer switch controller. It is suitable for single and 3 phase systems and includes all necessary monitoring and protections. It works with most transfer switches in existence, including the recently discontinued GE Zenith MX-60 controller. Unlike some other controllers, the NATS22A does not require 12 Vdc control power and therefore an extra wire pair from the engine starting battery is NOT required. But 12Vdc control power can be connected if you want the controller to remain live when both ac sources are dead, such as when utility power is lost and the generator has not yet started.

Now you do not have to replace a perfectly good transfer switch simply because the original manufacturer will no longer sell a replacement for a non-working controller. Or, consider upgrading to the NATS22A if the lead time for an original replacement is unacceptably long.

AS REPLACEMENT FOR GE ZENITH MX-50 AND MX-60 CONTROLLERS

When the NATS22A is used as a replacement for the MX-50 (50P-2000) or MX-60 (P/N 50P-3000) controllers on an existing ZTX switch a summary of the installation steps would be as listed below. Switch specific step-by-step instructions can be provided with order to aid in identifying the wires and making the changes. If the controller is ordered with installation kit the following items will also normally be provided: control wire, butt splices and/or wire tap connectors, push-on connectors, wire ties, fuses and fuse holders. The NATS22A controller is considered an upgrade as compared to the MX-60 due to the additional sensing and adjustments available. However, the NATS22A does not have the R50 in-phase monitor capability used on 3-phase systems.

  1. select a location for the new controller (usually on front cover), make the cutout and mount the controller

  2. mount 4 new fuse holders and run 4 wires to new controller

  3. connect 2 wires from MX interconnect plug to new controller

  4. change wire connections to 2 position limit switches and run 4 wires to the new controller

  5. detach interconnect plug from old MX controller

  6. add 2 wire jumpers on new controller

  7. connect the engine start wires

  8. make any programming changes and test the system

  9. mark the old MX touch-pad as non-functional or obscure it with a cover

Note that GE Zenith also manufactured the same ZTX switch and brand labeled it for Coleman Powermate for use with the Powerstation generator. GE Zenith also manufactured the same ZTX switch and brand labeled it for Cummins Onan as model series RSZ. The replacement NATS22A controller works equally well for these switches.

AS REPLACEMENT FOR EATON CUTLER-HAMMER ATC-100 CONTROLLER

When the NATS22A is used as a replacement for the Eaton Cutler-Hammer ATC-100 (P/N 8160A00G24) controller on an existing RLC1 or ATC1 switch the wiring changes are relatively simple. This is because most of the necessary control connections are available right at the back of the existing ATC-100 controller. The NATS22A controller is considered an upgrade as compared to the ATC-100 due to the additional sensing and adjustments available. However, the NATS22A does not have the in-phase transition capability for 3-phase systems.

AS REPLACEMENT FOR GE ZENITH MX-150 CONTROLLER

When the NATS22A is used as a replacement for the MX-150 (P/N 50P-1160RPL) controller on an existing ZTG switch the existing RT or CPS control power supply box is not used. Some advanced features available in the MX-150 are not replicated in the NATS22A. If the user requires any of these features this replacement controller may not be suitable for the application.

  • sensing calibration for frequency
  • DS Disconnect Switch, Auto/Inhibit
  • EL/P Event Log & System Data
  • Q2 Peak Shave / Remote Load Test Input
  • R50 In Phase Monitor
  • S13 Transfer Commit
  • YEN Bypass Timers Key *
  • VI Voltage Imbalance (Three Phase) MEXEG Option Package
  • T3/W3 Elevator Pre-Signal Auxiliary Contacts **
  • UMD Universal Motor Load Disconnect Circuit **
  • ZNET Network Communications Interface Card ***

    * might be able to duplicate with ATS22A test button
** might be able to duplicate with ATS22A programmable output contact
*** NATS22A has other communication options

Switch specific step-by-step instructions can be provided with order to aid in identifying the wires and making the changes. If the controller is ordered with installation kit the following items will also normally be provided: control wire, butt splices and/or wire tap connectors, push-on connectors, wire ties, fuses and fuse holders.

AS REPLACEMENT FOR EATON CUTLER-HAMMER ATC-300 CONTROLLER

When the NATS22A is used as a replacement for the ATC-300 (P/N 6D32360G-- 8160A00G--) controller on an existing contactor-based switch, or breaker-based switch with a motor operator the existing multi-tap transformer is not used. Some advanced features available in the ATC-300 are not replicated in the NATS22A. If the user requires any of these features this replacement controller may not be suitable for the application.

  • Lockout and monitor modes
  • In-phase transition
  • Event log
  • Peak shaving / go to emergency
  • Phase reversal sensing (three phase)
  • Voltage imbalance sensing

Switch specific step-by-step instructions can be provided with order to aid in identifying the wires and making the changes. If the controller is ordered with installation kit the following items will also normally be provided: control wire, butt splices and/or wire tap connectors, push-on connectors, wire ties, fuses and fuse holders.

AS REPLACEMENT FOR DYNAGEN CONTROLLER

When the NATS22A is used as a replacement for the Dynagen controller on an existing Vigilant or ProTechtor switch, specific step-by-step instructions can be provided with order to aid in identifying the wires and making the changes. If the controller is ordered with installation kit the following items will also normally be provided: control wire, butt splices and/or wire tap connectors, push-on connectors, wire ties, fuses and fuse holders.  The NATS22A controller is considered an upgrade as compared to the ATC-100 due to the additional sensing and adjustments available.

AS REPLACEMENT FOR EATON CUTLER-HAMMER RTC-100 CONTROLLER

When the NATS22A is used as a replacement for the Eaton Cutler-Hammer RTC-100 controller on an existing "Green" EGS series switch the wiring changes are relatively simple. The NATS22A controller is considered an upgrade as compared to the ATC-100 due to the additional sensing and adjustments available. However, the NATS22A does NOT have the load control capability that is part of the RTC-100 controller. If load control IS being used to prevent potential overloading of the standby generator then the NATS22A probably is not a suitable replacement.

AS REPLACEMENT FOR OTHER CONTROLLERS

When the NATS22A is used as a replacement for other types of controllers a control wiring diagram is needed for the switch. This can sometimes be found in the original manufacturer's instruction manual for the switch or it may be pasted inside the cover. If it is not available then it will have to be created by manually tracing the wiring. The number and operating Voltage of the coils or solenoids must also be known. With this information in-hand it is usually possible incorporate the NATS22A into the switch.

NOTES:
1) "feature not available" means the OEM controller did NOT have this capability and that the NATS22A is an upgrade.
2) Other Voltage adjustment windows available within ranges of 110-530V for OV protection and 80-470V for UV protection.
3) Abbreviations: DO = drop out, unacceptable value; PU = pick up, acceptable value

If your switch is still under warranty we do not recommend replacing the OEM controller with this alternative as it will probably void the original manufacturer's switch warranty.
